The new group blog I am going to be participating in continues to move forward. It is not quite ready to go public, but some of the other writers have now posted their bios and our fearless leader is tweaking some of the administrative functions to make it easier to use and more visually appealing. It has been fun to watch the thing grow from an idea to something tangible.
Eric, the organizer of this thing, recently asked each of us who are involved in the project to consider the following questions:
How would you define blogging success?
Is this success measurable?
How will you/we know if we are being successful here?
So I'm curious....how would YOU answer those things?

"Blogging success" is hard to define, really. Traffic's nice, but it's too easy to get caught up in worrying about it. I suppose success is best defined as whatever it is about blogging that makes you happy. For me, it's usually having a core of regular readers who occasionally leave comments; meeting nifty people on a regular basis; getting the occasional link from someone I didn't know was aware; and most of all, blogging success is that blogging, for the most part, never gets boring. (OK, sometimes it does, but the solution there is simple: getting up from the computer, and you seem more than aware of that!)
I think jaquandor hit the nail right on the head. So, "what she said!"
Ummm...I think you mean, "What he said"! (The teeny picture doesn't make the beard very clear, I admit. :)
Dang... sorry jaq! *blush*
*squints* beard? they really don't make those photos big enough do they?
Heather - you can make up for your faux paus by linking over to Byzentine Shores (Jacquandor's blog). It's worth checking out!
Yeah, I know, I'm incredibly biased. But in this case I'm also right.
I have to agree with Jaquandor- when she said that “blogging success” is hard to define. But, a blog that I particularly like and return to, I can answer in terms of that aspect…
How would you define blogging success? When a blog has timeless content. Something that people can relate to, or have a valid opinion about.
Is this success measurable? It depends. There are certain things that will catch a reader’s eyes, and certain things that won’t. It all depends on your reader and also, the amount of exposure you put forth into----or even advertise it.
How will you/we know if we are being successful here? For me, if I keep returning to the site, as well as others. If you see an increase in your traffic- but a steady one. If you see the same readers coming back to give you their two cents, then I believe that’s a successful blog. If you enjoy what you’re writing and you all are getting a satisfying response, then I believe you’ve done your job!
OK, that's twice! I really gotta butch up my photo.
My dear pal, what can I say? I think it's the tie-dye shirt. The predominant impression it gives is pink which girls have been socialized to claim as feminine. I know you are a stud-muffin manly man.
I don't think you can even start to assess a blog's success until you have delineated the blog's purpose. Do ya think?
Blogging success - unfortunately, validation ties into it. But I maintain that it is "fulfilling" because I can write from my heart, about the things that matter to me, AND get feedback. And quality feedback is definitely more meaningful to me than quantity feedback.
So, my picture makes me look like a woman, and yours makes me think someone's watching me! ;)
By the way, that particular shirt is actually purple (I edited just my face out of this photo of The Daughter and I for that one), but you're right, scaled down that far it's got a pink-thing going on.
And I guess that doesn't matter, since I proudly wear pink anyway!
