Lost years of Pop Culture

I was checking out Mimi's blog this morning and found something sort of interesting. She suggests people go to Popculture maddness to find the top 75 songs from the year you turned 18. You can then identify which songs you really liked, which ones you hated. It's a bit of a walk down memory lane to reflect on the soundtrack that was playing during a key time in your life.

Cool idea. I have just one problem with that. I was 18 in 1975. Music SUCKED in the 70's. That whole dacade of pop culture was pretty much a waste, in my humble opinion. No wonder I kept listening to the classic rock from my brothers generation and skipped over this rot entirely.

Yeah, that's true. The station I listen to does "9 at 9" where they play "9 great songs from one great year", and man, I tell you, there were some years (like my birth year of 1972) where they are really reaching to find nine great songs...

Sigh.

I looked at 1994 and 1995, the two years I was 18. Eek, that's a scary dose of Bryan Adams, Celine, & Mariah, with only the occasional glimmer of brightness (Prince, U2, Lisa Loeb, Crash Test Dummies -- yes, I admit it! I loved the CTD!) I'm also glad that that blasted theme from Friends has finally faded away after years and years of torture. And Hootie -- he needed to go away, too.

One that made me smile is "Kiss from a Rose" by Seal. I wasn't a particular fan of his music, but the first time I heard the song was while on my first trip abroad, the summer after I graduated from high school. I was in England with a friend for 6 weeks, staying with her aunt & uncle, and the day I heard that song for the first time was the one day of our trip that I took off on my own for a whole day (I travelled by train and bus to visit the little town my great-grandfather came from, and my friend wasn't interested, so I decided to go it alone). I felt so magnificently independent and self-sufficient, finding my way all that distance in a strange land and then making my way back safely. That song was playing on the bus as I headed back from my solo adventure, so I always think of that feeling of exhilirated Real Adulthood when I hear it. It also reminds me of the bus driver, who called me "Love." What lovely memories...

Music does have a powerful ability to evoke memories. There are some old tunes by Boston and AC/DC that I will always cherish for the associated memories of what I had going on at the time they were popular, even though I don't listen to that sort of stuff much anymore.

Hmm, I think that is funny. I found more songs I like at the time I was born (early 70s) than I ever did when I graduated from High School (Early 90s right before grundge hit big). There was a three year period when music just sucked - kind of like the last five years.

1975: Keith Jarrett, The Koln Concert. Yes! One of the most beautiful amazing piano improvisations ever recorded! Can't get much better than that. Oh, you wanted pop, I forgot. Let's see, was Supertramp out yet? Their Logical Song is pretty heard to beat in the pop chronicles. Oh. 1979. OK, How about I'm Not in Love by 10cc. To me, that is still one of the high points of Seventies pop, and it was released in 1975. So there!
